Recycled Waste from 2013
In continuation to Recycled Symbols, the first pieces belonging to the series Recycled Waste also consist of a symbolic frame loaded with nostalgic porcelain figurines. In contrast, usage of other materials and colours to accentuate its frame results in a different sense of decadence; instead of a chrome golden layer reflecting a sweet and valuable sense of decadence, by using a black tarry layer with the formation of little drops, as a direct reflection of our need for excessive consumption, a morbid sense of decadence is established. The porcelain figurines are connected to the frame with the same black tarry substance. However, the massive constellation of porcelain figurines resists this frame’s swallowing character. In time, the symbolic frame is replaced by a pile of waste, which is derived from Segall’s own consumption. The blood-red immersed artist’s waste reinforces the nostalgic image of a small white porcelain sculpture. And so a new destination is found for those old-fashioned figurines. Or will it eventually become part of our waste?
Recycled Symbols from 2009
Old-fashioned figurines used in this work were frequently present in homes of western families. Nowadays, these statuettes are massively discarded. Only the elderies adhere to those nostalgic objects untill deatch or relocation to a nursery home do them part. The figurines are then disposed as trash or sold to collectors. Influenced by media propaganda, recycling for sustainability is of great importance in my recent work. The figurines are connected by a shining gold-colored frame. A symbolic frame with a strong and sensitive charge, overwhelmed by a kitsch massiveness. Those nostalgic, porcelein figurines in an enlightening atmosphere will be rediscovered and enclosed in our modern interiors.
Recycled Symbols
De oude beeldjes, gebruikt in dit werk, waren vroeger modieuze stukken door de consument in huis gehaald om de vensterbank, bijzettafel en schouw te versieren. Tegenwoordig worden deze beeldjes massaal weggedaan. Slechts ouderen houden vast aan het nostalgisch beeld. Bij overlijden of verhuizing naar een verzorgingshuis worden deze beeldjes via kringloopwinkels en door handelaren op rommelmarkten verkocht. Duurzaamheid door hergebruik is door de invloed van de massa en media propaganda een centrale rol gaan spelen in mijn werk. De nostalgie van de porseleinen beeldjes in een verlichtende ambiance zorgt voor een nieuwe plaats van dit oude goed in westerse interieurs. De beeldjes zijn verbonden via een frame met een chromen laklaag. Een symbolisch frame, met een sterke gevoelige lading, overspoeld door een kitscherige massaliteit.
Tendency 2008 – 2009
Is a result / continuation of “Porn your life “, where I was mainly concerned with “privacy” focused on my own life, ‘tendency’ focused on others / the world.
Tendency is een uitwerking / vervolg op ‘Porn your life’, waar ik me toen vooral bezighield met ‘privacy’ gericht op mijn eigen leven, is ‘tendency’ gericht op anderen / de wereld. Tendency = neiging, inclinatie, hang, gezindheid geneigdheid, tendens, strekking, tendentie, geest, teneur, beduidenis, beduiding, betekenis bedoeling
Porn your life 2006-2008
The work ‘Porn your life’ is made up of different media: images, installations, texts, photography and film. Each idea chooses its own medium. The works are direct, spontaneous expressions of feelings that I expose blatantly. ‘Porn your life’ is inspired by the phenomenon that we in the Western world know more and more about each other, for example because of mass internet payments. People know when you paid, what you bought, when you saw the doctor, and so on. Institutions and companies play into that and use your personal information without your knowledge. You are made to carry id at all times to create a sense of security. My work also comments on reality shows on which people (pretend to) bare all, mentally and physically. As voyeurs, viewers expect greater extremes every time, raising the bar constantly to please viewers. A little nudity or rough language doesn’t turn a single Western-Europe head anymore.
De ‘Porn your life’ werken bestaan uit verschillende media (beelden,installaties, tekst, fotografie en film). Ieder werk komt voort uit een idee dat zich daar voor leent. Het zijn directe spontane uitingen van gevoelens die ik schaamteloos bloot leg (in een setting van familiaire sfeer). In de westelijk wereld weten we steeds meer van elkaar door het massale betalingsverkeer, waarbij elke transactie via het internet loopt. Men weet wanneer je hebt betaald, wat je heb gekocht, wanneer je naar de dokter bent geweest enz… Instellingen, bedrijven spelen hier op in en maken gebruik van je gegevens zonder dat je het weet. Je wordt verplicht je identiteitsbewijs mee te dragen omdat het een veilig gevoel zou geven. Ook gaat mijn werk in op realty-programma’s waar men zich gespeeld of niet gespeeld geestelijk en lichamelijk blootlegt. De kijker als voyeur verwacht steeds meer schrikeffecten, waardoor de lat steeds hoger gelegd wordt om kijker maar te pleasen. Voor een beetje bloot of gescheld kijkt de (vooral de noord Europese) westerling niet meer weg.
